Nach der Set-Top-Box ist vor dem Dongle: Die große Nachfrage nach Google Chromecast wirft die Frage auf, warum Apple sein TV-Hobby nicht einfach als HDMI-Stick weiterverfolgt?

Das ewige Hobby, das Tim Cook von Steve Jobs geerbt hat, entwickelt sich zum veritablen Geschäftszweig – die Set-Top-Box Apple TV. Verkäufe von mehr als 10 Millionen Einheiten generierten erstmals Umsätze von mehr als einer Milliarde Dollar in einem Geschäftsjahr, konnte der Apple-CEO jüngst auf der Hauptversammlung verkünden.
Zwei Jahre nach der dritten Generation steht das Nachfolgemodell nun unmittelbar bevor– wie es aussehen könnte, haben wir vor einigen Wochen in unserem Konzept zum Apple TV touch gezeigt.
Doch es muss nicht immer eine Set-Top-Box sein, um im Wohnzimmer digitale Inhalte zwischen Fernseher und Computer, Tablet und Smartphone zu streamen, wie Google Chomecast beweist. Der Dongle des wertvollsten Internetkonzerns der Welt feierte vergangene Woche auch in Europa ein furioses Debüt.
Wir von CURVED/labs haben uns Gedanken gemacht, wie eine Antwort von Apple im Segment HDMI-Sticks aussehen könnte: sagt "Hallo" zu Apple TV Air!
• Ein Apple TV Air wäre die günstigste Variante zum Apple TV – wir würden eine Preishalbierung auf 49 Dollar/Euro erwarten
• Der TV-Stick aus Cupertino kommt in zwei Teilen daher: Als HDMI-Dongle (das eigentliche Apple TV) und mit einer kleineren Fernbedienung als beim Set-Top-Box-Modell
• Der Dongle wird wie die Set-Top-Box mittels HDMI-Slot an einen Flachbildfernseher angeschlossen und mit Strom versorgt; die Fernbedienung besitzt wechselbare Batterien wie das aktuelle Modell
• Die Verbindung wird über Bluetooth hergestellt
• Apple TV Air kommt wie das iPhone 5c mit Plastikverbauung daher, sieht aber immer noch stylish aus – man denke etwa an den ersten iPod Shuffle

It may no longer be a hobby: A couple of weeks ago Tim Cook revealed at the shareholder meeting that its set-top box Apple TV generated more than a billion dollar in revenues for the first time in a fiscal year, selling more than 10 million units.
The fourth generation of Apple TV could be introduced this spring; we layed out our concept of an Apple TV touch a couple of weeks ago. But it doesn’t actually take a full blown set-top box to invade the living room as Google’s widely successful dongle Chromecast which debuted last week in Europe has proved.
At CURVED/labs we are one step ahead and mused about how Apple TV could evolve as an HDMI stick: Welcome to Apple TV Air!
• Apple TV Air is the cheapest possible way to watch Apple TV
• It consists of two parts: the HDMI 'dongle' (the actual Apple TV) and a small remote control, both sold together in one box for aprox. 49 $/EUR.
• The dongle is powered through HDMI, while the remote has a small changeable battery like the current Apple TV remote
• Connection over Bluetooth (IR not possible due to fact that the box will always be out of sight)
• Made from plastic materials to keep costs down but maintaining Apple’s trademark quality (think back to the first generation Apple iPod shuffle)
